Available Custom-Tomahawks And Trade-Axes, Hand-Forged, Period Pieces
Of all the custom-tomahawks traded to the native American Indians or First Nations People, by far the most common type was the simple hand forged trade or belt axe. It was the earliest type of tomahawk to reach the native American Indians and it remained popular from the 16th through the 19th century.
The word tomahawk generally refers to a light, hatchet-like implement that was derived from the standard European half-axe. Normally these tomahawks and trade-axes were made in two pieces: A strap of wrought iron was wrapped around a mandrel to make the eye, the ends of the strap were forged to make the flare of the blade. A piece of carbon steel was then inserted between them and forged welded for a cutting edge. This was also known as a "composite" axe.
Our custom-tomahawks are hand-forged using the composite method (we substitute 1018 steel for wrought iron, as it is unfortunately no longer available. 1018 steel is the closest you can get to wrought iron)
We also use the pierced eye method in both 1018 and high carbon steel. And finally, we also forge US or British made ball peen hammers into hawks. This method was popular during the second half of the 19th century.
